2014 Newsletter 6 February

Dear Members

Time is flying and we are already in February. Exciting things are happening regarding your 'Road to Registration'. Carien Botha has undertaken the first road-show to assist you in obtaining professional registration with less stress and over a much shorter period of time. Very positive feedback came from a number of people attending in Cape Town. Carien will be in Durban on 27 February 2014 at the Durban University of Technology from 18:00 to 20:00 and on 28 February she will address the students. Don't delay, attend this worthwhile presentation and put your future on the right path. Please fill out the form under 'Road to Registration' on the SAIIE website! http://www.saiie.co.za/road_to_registration

Other exciting events are on offer from as soon as 19 February (and again on 24 February) when the University of Western Cape School of Business and Finance facilitates a workshop for the Metals, Engineering and Related Industries (on behalf of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism) on the Infrastructural expenditure by Government, State-owned Enterprises and parastatals in excess of R800 billion over the next eight years, at the Pinelands Library Hall from 10h00 to 14h00. (Behind Howard Centre off Forest Drive).

Another event 'Cloud Collaboration for the Supply Chain of Tomorrow', presented by SAIIE or SIG, ORSSA Pretoria and Resolve, takes place on 20 February 2014 at 17h00 for 18h00 at the Jupiter Building, 47 Landmarks Avenue, Kosmosdal, Samrand, Centurion. RSVP online at SAIIE or 20feb.eventbrite.com

From far-off shores you will find interesting conferences under Events on our website. A new entry is the 2nd Annual International Conference on Industrial, Systems and Design Engineering, 23-26 June 2014, Athens, Greece - just in case you need to get your passport in order.

Closer to home the University of Pretoria put out an 'Announcement and final call papers' for the 9th World Congress on Engineering Asset Management, 28-31 October 2014 at the CSIR ICC Pretoria. Furthermore, AfricaRail Conference will have "Africa's largest rail, transport and infrastructure show" on 1 and 2 July 2014 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

The SAIIE Service Sector will present Industrial Engineer the Entrepreneur on 27 February 2014 at the PwC Business School, 7 Kikuyu Road, Sunninghill, Johannesburg from 17h00 to 19h00.

Very seldom does one get anything for free, but the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) will host a workshop for employees/members of NSTF Member Organisations, of which SAIIE is a member, for free. The topic: Energy Workshop: Does the Government's Energy Planning take full account of the available technologies, environmental impact, and the required Research and Development? This event will be held on 4 March 2014 at the President Hotel in Mangaung (Bloemfontein). Please see the website under Events.

Still in March, for the first time worldwide, Brian Barr and Leo Grutters, the authors of the FIDIC Users' Guide 3rd Edition, will be personally lecturing at three workshops. Both authors are members of the FIDIC's President's List of Approved Dispute Adjudicators, and bring over 40 years' in-depth FIDIC experience, as well as conducting training courses on how to use FIDIC in various contexts. This is a comprehensive update of the well-known standard reference work of Brian Totterdill, taking into account newly published forms of contract, case studies and FIDIC's expansion into a more international arena. This 1,6 kg publication, (get a free copy if you attend), stimulates better contract administration, highlights accountability and addresses contentious issues with relevant conclusions on dispute avoidance rather than dispute resolution. (Midrand on Monday 3 March 2014 at the Bytes Conference Centre; Durban on Wednesday 5 March 2014 at the Garden Court, uMhlanga; Cape Town on Friday 7 March 2014 at Belmont Square Conference Centre).

The South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE), with the support of various other voluntary associations, will host the Civilution Congress at Emperors Palace from 6 to 8 April 2014. Speakers such as the Minister in the Presidency, Trevor Manuel and Advocate Thuli Madonsela, Public Protector, will address delegates on the National Development Plan and on corruption, tenderpreneuring and ethics in the infrastructure engineering sector, respectively. Annexure A: Online Platform Update

SAIIE has previously mentioned that we are enabling more functionality on our online platform. Please find some of the highlights on the current platform and an overview of the roadmap that is still in the pipeline.

  1. The member management portal - This has gone live last year in June, and most of our members have been using this function to update their personal profiles and pay membership fees. If you have not seen this, please log onto the platform and view you profile, your account status and certificate. http://www.saiie.co.za/
  2. Conference registration platform - SAIIE has also implemented our integrated platform that will allow our members to book a place at the yearly conference; it also provides all the information required to submit a paper or to present at the conference - http://www.saiie.co.za/saiie26. This function will also be enabled for our Special Interest Groups (SIG) events in due time.
  3. Knowledge Share - Please make use of the knowledge share function. This will allow only our members the privilege to share and view knowledge with one another. The tool allows the sharing of videos that is already posted on YouTube. We can make a difference in our IE community by making use of this function - http://www.saiie.co.za/client/knowledge-share
  4. Engineering Companies database - The launch of our first-of-a-kind:
    • Industrial Engineering Product and Service Provider Online Database, featuring companies/entities ,which either:
      • Ø Offer Industrial Engineering-related services;
      • Ø Employ Industrial Engineering practitioners;
      • Ø Require, from time to time, professional services offered by Industrial Engineering practitioners; Offer products and/or services relevant to the Profession, or
      • Ø Offer products and/or services that Industrial Engineering practitioners may use in practicing their Profession, or in a professional capacity.
      • Ø Offer white papers/case studies specific for professional community
    • Access to employment opportunities, including:
      • Ø Opportunities for undergraduate/vacation work;
      • Ø Opportunities for contract work ,and
      • Ø Opportunities for work related to academic research and/or dissertation topics (both undergraduate and postgraduate students).
    • Access to potential Industrial Engineering practitioners seeking employment
    This function is already available online to all SAIIE members, we are still in the process to upload information from the Industry.
  5. Career Portal - This will allow the Industry to advertise vacant positions, student work and allow our members to upload their electronic CVs. These CVs will be available in the market (Platform) for companies to identify potential new employees - all information will only be shared based on the members' preference and security settings. This function will be available on the platform in the next week.
  6. Online training - SAIIE has implemented the online training function, we have started to engage with various market leaders on relevant training content. For Members that are registered with ECSA, most of these courses will also be accredited to earn you CPD credits.
  7. CPD Manager - This function is still in development, and will be integrated with the conference (CPD Credits), online training (CPD Credits) and will allow members to upload their CPD certificates and events for compliance to ECSA. CPD Credits will be stored/ uploaded and reminders for renewals will be sent to members who would like to use this facility.
  8. Mentor Connector - This function is still in development. SAIIE has recognised that our members, at times, require Mentors in their current environments and we have a list of Mentors who wish to guide other members on this career path. This function will allow these members to link, using the mentor connector function. This will be available shortly.

SAIIE has more additional benefits that will be shared in due time. But as you can see, we have made some excellent progress with the implementation of the new platform. Any comments can be sent to us or logged onto the contact form - http://www.saiie.co.za/contact-us
