Some of the highlights were:

  • The visits to suppliers such as the Lear Corporation, the manufacturer of leather car seats illuminated the implications of true JIT.
  • A visit to FoxTec Ikhwezi, a local subsidiary of German company Fuchs, was an eye opener.

The undisputed highlight of the tour was the visit to the Mercedes-Benz plant.

Students apply their skills to optimise the supply chain processes in a mortuary and histology laboratory.

Blood, organs and autopsies. You may be thinking we're a little late for Halloween, and these are not your typical supply chain-related topics. For

two bright, young supply chain students, however, a mortuary and a histology laboratory presented the ideal environments in which to conduct

Progress: Training and Professional Development under a Commitment and Undertaking (CU) with ECSA and Mentorship requirements

 By Johan Louw

Numerous young engineers start their careers after completing their studies and grabble with the questions regarding professional registration. Typically issues that are raised:

  • Is there a recognized development program I can follow?
  • Availability of an experienced mentor in the company I work for?
  • Will the company I work for support the registration process to follow?
  • Etc.

South African Continuous Improvement (CI) Forum PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bernadette Patricia Sunjka

From: Dieter Hartmann

During October, Wits University Industrial Engineering Department hosted the Gauteng chapter of the South African Continuous Improvement (CI) Forum. The CI forum is an industry round table that is hosted on a quarterly basis, rotating between participant institutions. This discussion circle classically involves presentations by the hosts and discussion afterwards. Most of the participants value the networking opportunities that this circle represents as well as the opportunity to learn from peers’ mistakes and successes.

Breaking with the traditional programme, Wits Industrial Engineering decided to present Industrial Engineering student projects that were done in the course of their third and fourth years. These were well received by the industry partners who are now excited to forge closer ties with the university. After this session, the previously general and open ended discussions were replaced by case studies that were specifically developed for this forum. The topics covered ranged from “CI at Home Affair” to “CI in hard rock mining” to “CI in the rollout of an effective Primary Healthcare-Promoters Network” the sessions were very well received and vigorous and lively debate was observed.

The day was rounded off with a campus tour at sunset, one of Johannesburg’s underrated inner city charms. Then during a lab tour, an opportunity for our guests to sit in our school’s Mirage Fighter Jet.

SAIIE introduced a corporate partner program in May this year. We thought that we needed to have a closer alliance with the companies in Southern Africa who employ Industrial Engineers, so as to involve them in the decisions that we as a voluntary association need to make to take this exciting engineering discipline into the future.

Our progress to date has been very exciting!
